vibeSeamer

A tailor's measuring assistant that lives in an iPhone, and drafts the pattern afterwards.

Someone walks a slow circle around you holding the phone. Half a minute later it has your 38 tailoring measurements, each with a band for how sure it is, and it asks for a tape only where it is not. Pick a design and it drafts a pattern to those numbers. I would like an honest opinion from someone who sews for a living: is this useful, or am I solving the wrong problem?

01 · The loop

How a measurement happens

  1. Walk a circle

A helper holds the phone at chest height and walks once around the person, 1.5–2 m away, in about 25 seconds. The phone's depth sensor records the body shape as it goes. Tight clothing, level floor, even light.

  2. Check the rings

The app slices the body at each level and shows the measured girths as rings on the live camera view, so you can see at a glance that the waist ring sits at the waist. Values it is unsure about get a check badge.

  3. Tape what it asks for

The precise tier asks for four tapes. You say them out loud the way a tape reads, "thirty-one and a quarter", and the app writes them in. A taped value always beats the camera's, and a tape far from what the camera read is flagged as you type it.

If the walk does not cover enough of the body, the app says the orbit is incomplete and offers only to scan again, rather than saving numbers it made up. While you walk it coaches you with arrows: keep going, slow down, move closer, tilt. Works in inches or centimeters everywhere, including fractions on a tape. Measurements can also be typed by hand from an existing card, with no camera at all.

02 · The numbers

The 38 measurements

The same set FreeSewing drafts from, so every design knows exactly which rows it needs. Marked rows are estimated from the others rather than measured, and carry a wider band.

03 · Honesty

How much to trust it

Every value is stored with its source and an error band, and the band stays visible on screen and on the printed summary. These are the tiers the app works in today.

TierHowTypical band
CameraOne orbit, nothing taped1–3 cm
PreciseOrbit plus four tapes0.5 cm on the taped rows
EstimateSelf-scan, front and side only, when nobody can help2.5 cm or 4 %, whichever is larger
TypedYour own tape, entered by hand or voice0.5 cm assumed

The target for the camera tier is a median error of 1 cm on lengths and 2 cm on girths in tight clothing. That is not proven on real bodies yet. The app keeps a log of every camera value against the tape that later replaced it, so the claim can be checked instead of believed. Sanity checks flag the obvious: left and right disagreeing, a waist larger than the seat, a taped value far from the camera's.

04 · The pattern

From a set to a pattern

Patterns are drafted on the phone by FreeSewing, the open-source parametric drafting library, straight from the person's measurements. No sizes, no grading between them. Change the seam allowance or a style option, such as the collar or the ease, and it redrafts in a second.

Seventy-three designs are built in, each with a line drawing, grouped by garment and searchable. The 42 garments and blocks below, plus 31 more: accessories, plush toys, costumes and further garments.

  • Tops T-shirt, tank, draped-neck top, one-piece top, princess-seam top, raglan swim shirt
  • Shirts button-down, with and without bust shaping
  • Sweaters and hoodies sweater, raglan hoodie, zip hoodie, zipless hoodie
  • Jackets and coats waistcoat, sport coat, long coat in two fits, Roman cloak, tunic, tabard
  • Trousers chinos, summer pants, leggings in two fits, wrap pants, cycling breeches
  • Shorts and swimwear swim trunks, bikini top, one-piece
  • Skirts and dresses pencil skirt, circle skirt, 1790s shift
  • Underwear boxer briefs, briefs, underbust corset
  • Apron and six blocks for drafting your own: bodice with darts, princess-seam bodice, plain bodice, body, body with two-part sleeve, knit top, trouser block
  • Tiled PDFLetter or A4 pages with a cover sheet and alignment grid, for a home printer.
  • Large-format PDF and SVGOne sheet for a copy shop plotter, or the raw drawing.
  • ProjectorCast the pattern at true size onto the fabric from a projector. A calibration square is measured once per session, so a 4 in square is 4 in on the cloth.
  • Materials and fabric planningA checklist of cloth, lining and notions with quantities and prices, and a fabric estimate per fabric width that accounts for fold, grain, shrinkage and a reserve. Where the app cannot be sure how a piece is cut, it says so instead of guessing. Exports as PDF and CSV.
  • Project packetOne frozen bundle of the measurements, materials, cutting checklist and tiled pattern for a job, so a later edit never changes what you already shared.
05 · Privacy

On the phone, full stop

  • Depth frames, body outlines, point clouds, measurements and patterns are processed and kept on the phone. No account, no analytics, no uploads.
  • Scanning anyone but yourself needs their consent switched on in their profile first. A dress form is the only profile without it.
  • Each scan keeps a replayable recording on the device so a bad scan can be reprocessed later. Deleting a person deletes their sets and every recording.
06 · Status

Where it stands

  • WorkingRuns on one iPhone 15 Pro Max today: scan, review, tape, draft, print, project and plan fabric all work end to end. Last updated 18 October 2026 (scan-flow review fixes, 73 designs, materials).
  • NeedsAn iPhone Pro with the LiDAR sensor, a helper to walk the circle, and about two metres of clear floor.
  • Not yetCamera accuracy validated on a range of real bodies. Not in the App Store. No way to bring in a paper pattern you already own.
07 · Your turn

What I would love to know

  • Would you trust a camera's waist within two centimetres, if it told you when it was unsure?
  • Which of these garments would you actually make for a client, and what is missing?
  • Is printing and taping forty pages the real obstacle, or is it the measuring?
  • If this were yours to use, what would it have to do that it does not?
